World-renowned Bulgarian soprano Krassimira Stoyanova was born in the historic city of Veliko Tarnovo. She graduated from the National School of Music in Ruse and the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv, where she obtained degrees in violin, voice, and music pedagogy.
She took her first steps on the operatic stage at the Sofia National Opera, and after her 1998 debut at the Vienna State Opera, she soon established herself as one of the leading interpreters of Verdi, Puccini, Mozart and Richard Strauss. Between 1999 and 2003 she was a soloist of the Vienna State Opera, and in 2009 she received the prestigious title “Kammersängerin” of the Vienna State Opera.
Her international career includes performances on the most prestigious stages worldwide – the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Covent Garden, the Salzburg Festival, Teatro Real Madrid, Zurich Opera, and many others. She has collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, James Levine, Christian Thielemann, and Mariss Jansons.
Krassimira Stoyanova has an extensive discography, including solo albums with operatic arias for Orfeo, releases for Naxos, and appearances in acclaimed DVD productions. Krassimira Stoyanova was born in the historic Bulgarian city of Veliko Tarnovo. She graduated from the National School of Music in Ruse with violin as her principal instrument and later received her degree from the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts – Plovdiv, majoring in violin, singing, and music pedagogy. After completing her studies, she worked as a violinist with the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra, the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the National Music Academy “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov,” and with the New Symphony Orchestra. Beginning of her vocal career Her professional debut as an opera singer took place in 1995 on the stage of the Sofia National Opera as Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto. In the following years, Stoyanova performed leading roles in new productions of Le nozze di Figaro, Idomeneo and La clemenza di Tito by Mozart, La Juive by Halévy, and Il Guarany and Fosca by Gomes. Following her successful debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1998, she was invited to join the ensemble as a permanent member, performing as soloist between 1999 and 2003. Since 2003 she has been a regular guest soloist of the Vienna State Opera, where she has created numerous signature roles. International career At the Vienna State Opera she has sung in new productions of Falstaff, Otello, Don Carlo, Rusalka, Ariadne auf Naxos, La traviata, La bohème, Pagliacci, Turandot, Tosca, Simon Boccanegra, Der Rosenkavalier and many others. In 2009 she was honoured with the prestigious title of “Kammersängerin” of the Vienna State Opera – one of the highest distinctions in the world of opera. Her international career has taken her to the most prominent festivals and opera houses across Europe, North and South America. Among them are the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall in New York, Covent Garden and the Royal Albert Hall in London, La Scala in Milan, Deutsche Oper and Staatsoper Berlin, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Salzburg Festival, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Teatro Real Madrid, Opernhaus Zürich, the Finnish National Opera, and many other major stages worldwide. Discography Krassimira Stoyanova has released four solo albums of operatic arias for the Orfeo label, some of which have been distinguished with international awards, including I palpiti d’amor, Slavic Opera Arias, Verdi Arias, and Verismo Arias. Together with pianist Maria Prinz she recorded the complete songs of Giacomo Puccini, initially released by Gega New and later reissued by Naxos. Her impressive discography includes numerous live recordings – Otello with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Muti, Dvořák’s Requiem with the Royal Concertgebouw, Verdi’s Requiem with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Mariss Jansons, Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass with the London Philharmonic conducted by Sir Colin Davis, and others. In July 2025, under the baton of Pavel Balev and accompanied by the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, she recorded a disc of Mozart arias. Concert and chamber music activities Chamber music occupies a special place in Krassimira Stoyanova’s artistic life. She has given recitals at Carnegie Hall, the Musikverein and Konzerthaus Vienna, Opéra Bastille, Frankfurt Opera, Bavarian State Opera, La Scala, Zurich Opera, as well as at Bulgarian festivals such as “Piano Extravaganza” (Sofia), “Evenings at the Balabanov House” (Plovdiv) and “March Music Days” (Ruse).
